Ride Press

The New Years Eve Bike Safety Ride completes its 2nd year. Read the reviews:
Corona del Mar Today and Corona del Mar Patch.

It was quite the cool morning with low temps in the 30s, but once we got to the peninsula everyone was nicely warmed up. The route included a roundtrip along the Bayside Sharrows and the only flaw to today’s ride was the impatience of auto drivers; a reminder that the awareness we seek with sharing the road still has a long way to go. It’s a game of inches.

Santa bring you a new bike?
Let’s take it for a ride, the 2nd Annual New Years Eve Bike Safety Ride!

Meet at Bayside and Marguerite in CdMWe meet at 8am Friday Dec 31st in the parking lot at Bayside and Marguerite in Corona del Mar for an easy, fun ride to the peninsula via the Balboa Is ferry, $1.25 ea way. It’ll be quiet; it’s off-season. Last year I wore gloves, so bundle up, but we’ll work ourselves warm on this cruise along the Bayside Sharrows on to the Wedge and eventually the Newport Pier where we’ll break for a snack then return the way we came. Details here.

Thanks to my sponsors: BikeTiresDirect, Corona del Mar Today, Pedego Electric Bikes and Two Wheels One Planet.

This is not your neighborhood bike store!

Consider the keys to starting a high-tech online store: a business plan, certainly, venture capital, maybe, but this operation literally started as a garage operation.

Today he operates a number of online retail sites, so you’d think it was all well planned out, but he’ll describe how instead it was an “accidental opportunity”. Today Lou Doctor‘s ecommerce operation has 30 employees managing sites for billiards, darts, golf clubs, pool cues and bike tires.

As you know, online stores offer many advantages over bricks-and-mortar competitors, so maybe you’ll be surprised to hear of his plans to open a retail bike store in downtown Portland.

And what advantages does Portland offer versus Palo Alto, where it began?

Lou has enjoyed quite a career over the 20 years I’ve known him. He’s an entrepreneur many times over, so it’s been fun to watch how BikeTiresDirect and his other sites have grown and prospered. Listen in as he describes how he operates his growing online empire.

Colin Cooper“We are Holland,” according to City of Hillsboro Planning Manager, Colin Cooper; that’s how he likes to describe his city to the press. Does that make Los Angeles more like a Barcelona?

Platinum Portland “sets the bar for all of us,” in terms of cycling initiatives, he adds. Hillsboro is surrounded by beautiful farmland, just a little over a mile from downtown; it’s great for cycling.

BikeStation Hillsboro, ORHillsboro just installed a BikeStation facility near their downtown light rail station adjacent to the Cultural Arts Center and Tuality Hospital, one of many large employers. Imagine this sustainable transportation model: take your bike on the train then cycle the last miles to work. BikeStation Hillsboro, ORYou’ll learn much of Hillsboro listening to Colin, like the fact that all Intel’s latest chip designs are created locally.

From a California point of view, Hillsboro and the greater Portland area seem way ahead in terms of accommodating cyclists, but what are the issues they continue to face in terms of buy-in from the driving public?

And what’s the Urban Growth Boundary? Listen to hear Colin describe how Oregon uses it to control sprawl.
